Ms. Alissa - Lead Teacher (Morning)
Alissa has lived in Haines for most of her adult life. Shortly after moving to Haines she started work at Chilkat Valley Preschool as the Assistant Teacher. Alissa held the position for 5 years during which time she received her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. When she became pregnant with her first child she decided to stay home, but stayed on the CVP board for 8 years while her two children were young and attended CVP. For 5 of those years she was the Board President and accomplished many tasks, including the 2017 building project. When Alissa was ready to go back to work the lead teacher position opened, and she happily took it. Alissa loves young children and nurturing their developing minds. In her free time she enjoys outdoor sports and activities, yoga, and traveling with her family.
Ms. Hannah - Assistant Teacher (Morning)
Hannah was born and raised in Haines, Alaska and got a first hand taste of small, intimate schooling when she attended Mosquito Lake School. Once she had “graduated” from the small school by reaching 5th grade, she returned every few weeks to teach art to the younger students. She maintained an interest in working with children into her adulthood, running and assisting with various theatre camps and classes with children ages 3-13. Upon completing her degree in Theatre (acting, writing, and directing) at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA she returned to Haines where she continued to work as a care provider with REACH and create art both visual and theatrical in the community. When the position opened at CVP Hannah recognized a place to combine her love of working with children and learning via the arts. Hannah is enjoying learning and playing with the Chilkat Valley Preschoolers.
Ms. Betsy- Lead Teacher (Afternoon)
Betsy Shiner is the lead teacher in the afternoon. She studied the Child Development and Elementary Education at Michigan State University. Outside of school, she spends time creating art, playing music and exploring the great outdoors. Betsy brings the experience of Reggio Emilia and Waldorf preschools to our program. She believes children are competent and capable learners and hopes to provide exciting and meaningful learning experiences daily.
Ms. Dacotah- Office Manger/Assistant Teacher (Afternoon)
Dacotah was born and raised in the Midwest. Upon earning her degree in environmental science and her M.B.A. in California, she decided to pursue her dreams of living in Alaska full time and made the move up to Haines. While originally working as a tour guide she realized that sharing the outdoors with eager children was exciting and rewarding! So when the job became available she was excited to take on the new role in the community and is enjoying every minute. She is enjoying watching them grow.
